OPD promoting 'Eye on Owensboro' campaign; residents can register security cameras to help with investigations

The Owensboro Police Department is promoting the “Eye on Owensboro” campaign, which allows residents to opt in to be a part of a camera database to aid OPD in solving all manner of investigations in the community.

This initiative allows residents and businesses to register security cameras on their property with OPD. Should an incident occur in the nearby vicinity, OPD will contact owners who have opted in.

After the owner has been contacted, an investigator will let them know how to turn over the footage to OPD for evidence.

“The Owensboro Police Department will not be able to view private cameras through Eye on Owensboro. Only their physical location will be compiled on a comprehensive list,” OPD Public Information Officer Dylan Evans said.

Evans said that using the community’s security cameras will help deter crime and assist in solving one after it has happened.

Currently, when an alleged crime occurs, officers and detectives canvas the immediate area to see if residential or business surveillance cameras may have recorded any of the action. Then, OPD works with the camera owner to retrieve video for investigative purposes.

This new initiative will enable officers to have information regarding cameras at their fingertips, with the goal of speeding up the investigation process to potentially solve cases more quickly.

Asked last week about their methods specifically when it comes to calls about firearm discharges, OPD said in a statement they are always looking at new technology to help their investigation process.

“We are always researching and evaluating new technology that will aid in the detection and apprehension of those who violate the law,” Evans said last week.

There is no cost to register a camera. After a camera is registered, a member of OPD will visit the building to verify the information and gift the facility with an “Excellent Outcomes through Community Partnerships” window decal.
